Royal Dublin Golf Club - Harry Colt Links

Harry Colt, a legend in golf design, created the links of Royal Dublin in the 1920s. It was set among the dunes of Bull Island in a classic out-and-back format.

Around the turn of the millennium, with improvements in club and ball technology resulting in the prodigious length of modern golfers, a new approach was needed.

Renowned course architect Martin Hawtree was engaged by the members to update the Holt design. Hawtree has lengthened the course, adding 18 new raised and contoured greens, and transformed sections of the course.

Now well over 7,000 yards off the championship tees, Royal Dublin is a sterling test of all golfing skills - ball striking and, most of all, course management.

The Royal Dublin Golf Club is located on the Bull Island Nature Reserve, separated from the world by Dublin Bay, yet only minutes from historic Dublin and convenient to both the city and the airport. This famous links course has hosted many professional and amateur tournaments and provides a test of golf that has been enjoyed by golfing greats and amateurs alike for over 100 years. The course and luxury facilities are available to visitors year round.

Be smart from the off at Royal Dublin. If the wind is behind you at the first tee, be sure to score well on the front nine, as you will be against it on the turn right back to the clubhouse. The rough here is brutal, so keep an eye on your ball if you sway from the fairway.

The 510 yards Par 5 6th requires skill and accuracy to bend around the gentle dog-leg. This will be sweet for the player who can draw the ball from the tee. The raised green tempts you to have a go at it. The 10th is a tough hole to tackle. A ditch at the front of the green creates problems and the green itself has some tough slopes.

All the usual big names have been here at some point or another. This includes the likes of Nicklaus and Trevino, Ballesteros and Langer, Faldo and Floyd, Norman and Els... and none more legendary than Ireland’s own Christy O'Connor. They've tested their games against the best on this famous championship links and those who were witness have carried the stories to all corners of the globe.

"For over 50 years I have been proud of my association with Royal Dublin. On behalf of the members and management I welcome you, and I hope you will enjoy this great course and the hospitality as much as I have over the years." Christy O’Connor
